NEW Ireland and the Autonomous Region of Bougainville will renew and strengthen official and traditional ties when ABG President Dr. John Momis begins a four-day official visit of New Ireland Province this week.
President MOMIS’ visit marks an important new chapter in the relations at official government level between the two provinces adopted in the Kubu Joint Communiqué signed in June 2009 by the former ABG President James Tanis and Governor Sir Julius Chan at the conclusion of the reciprocal reconciliation ceremonies in Buka.
The President’s visit comes at the invitation of the Governor Sir Julius who will be joined by about 100 members of the Council of Elders to welcome Dr Momis and his delegation at the opening of their 2011 annual conference this week.
President Momis will officially open the Council of Elders conference on Wednesday then continue his itinerary that will take him to Konos then Namatanai where a special traditional welcome will be hosted marking his homecoming to reunite with his blood relatives from southern New Ireland.
The visit to New Ireland is the first official engagement for President Momis outside Bougainville since assuming office after his election victory.
Also visiting New Ireland at the same time will be the Governor of Western Province, Dr Bob Danaya and Member for Sumkar Ken Fairweather.
They accepted invitations from Governor Sir Julius and will also participate at the Council of Elders conference and continue on their separate itineraries.
Sir Julius said New Ireland is ready to receive all these important national dignitaries visiting for the first time under their current leadership roles and gives New Ireland the honour to display the New Ireland hospitality and friendship.
